Making Use of Intentions

The objective of an assistive system is to support a human being in everyday life. In general, this support can address conscious needs as well as unconscious ones. Conscious needs may be mere desires or they may become intentions that give rise to deliberate, conscious actions. In this case, an assistive system may try to infer a person’s intentions from the observed actions. Otherwise, an assistive system has to rely on prior knowledge regarding a person’s needs in speci c situations. In this paper, we will concentrate on assisting intentional activities. When looking for a mechanism that enables us to identify and assist intentional behavior, we are speci cally using two abstraction mechanisms:
